Google has clarified its stance on the .co domain, days after it was released for sale. Google generally keeps country specific top level domain names local, such as with .nz domain names where you will rank better in New Zealand but not elsewhere.

Cost of .nz domain names about to get a lot cheaper.

The New Zealand Domain Name registry is reducing the wholesale domain name fee for .nz domain names by 16% as of the 1st of July. This reduces the annual wholesale fee for the 400,000 active .nz domains from $18 to $15 per domain.

Internationalised Domain Names

.nz Domain Names with macrons – Internationalised Domain Names

Beginning in Māori Language week 2010 (26 July – 01 August), registrations of .nz domain names which include macrons over the vowels will be available to everyone on a first-come, first-served basis.

What is a macron?

The written form of the Māori language, te reo, uses macrons over vowels to denote an extension of the sound of the vowel. Up until Māori Language week 2010, domain names within the .nz space are not able to include these characters. From then on, it will be possible to have a domain name which accurately reflects one of New Zealand’s official languages, Māori.

The extra characters that can be used are ā, ē, ī, ō and ū.
