Private Domain Registration

April 2nd, 2010 by Web Host Staff

Private domain name registration allows users to register a domain name and remain anonymous as the owner. This is frequently requsted to avoid having contact details listed when a WHOIS query is run on a domain.

The downside of private domain name registrations is that it makes it easy for cybersquatting and phishing and general misuse of domains.

Private .NZ Domain Registrations

It is not possible to privately register a .nz domain name, nor is it recommended to use incorrect details as the DNC may cancel the domain. There are ways however to ensure your personal details are not publicly displayed:

  • Use  a company name
  • Use a registered PO Box
  • Provide a cell phone rather than land-line, this will increase the cost to telemarketers.

Ultimately not having private domain registrations is a good thing for the .nz name space, reducing the risk of it becoming the wild west like some TLD’s have!
